Economic Stimulus package - Highlights

• A 13-week extension of unemployment benefits for those who lost their jobs after the recession began in March (Unemployment benefits are NOT applicable for H1B holders)



• The bill would modify the corporate minimum tax



• The bill reduces immediately the 27 percent income tax rate to 25 percent



• Millions of low-income individuals who did not qualify for the $300-per-person (or $600-per-family) tax rebate as part of the earlier tax bill will now qualify.

UK opens its doors to foreign IT workers

HSMP - UK's new Highly Skilled Migrant Policy might NOT be beneficiary for most of the H1B holders in USA or Hi-Tech workers from India. UK Government announced that it would run a program to allow individuals to seek entry to work in the United Kingdom without having a prior offer of employment. Applications can be submitted from 28 January 2002.

To qualify for this program, you will need to provide evidence that you score 75 points or more in the areas described below and demonstrate that you will be able to continue your chosen career in the United Kingdom. You will also need to show that you can support yourself and your family without using public funds during your stay.

In addition to scoring at least 75 points in the above areas you will also need to demonstrate

1. Your ability to continue to work in your chosen field in the United Kingdom.



2. That you have enough savings and/or potential income to be able to support yourself and your family. You will not be allowed any use of UK public funds whilst in the United Kingdom with permission to stay under the program.



3. That you are willing and able to make the United Kingdom your main home. The Govt. will ask you to provide a written undertaking to that effect.

Alternative routes of entry to the United Kingdom

The Highly Skilled Migrant Program is only one of a variety of legal routes open to individuals wishing to move to the United Kingdom. If an UK employer wants to employ you for a specific post, your prospective employer may wish to seek work permit for you. This must be obtained before you travel to the United Kingdom to take up that post.
