Electronic Filing of I-765s and I-90s

Applications that can be filed online are forms I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) and I-90 (Application for Replacement of Green Card). These two forms represent approximately 30% of the total number of benefit applications filed with BCIS annually.

BCIS intends to add electronic filing capabilities for additional forms in the Fall of 2003. Additional forms include: Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker; Form I-131, Application for Travel Document; Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker; Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status; Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status; and Form I-907, Request for Premium Processing.

SSN Update

Since September 1, 2002, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has used a "total verification" policy with respect to immigration documents. Social Security numbers will only be issued after completion of a document verification and status check, using the INS Systemic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program. This creates delays for one hesitant to start employment with the U.S. employer before having the Social Security number (SSN).

If you have H-1B approved or entered on a valid work VISA, you may be able to work legally for your employer before obtaining your SSN. But your payroll can be processed only after you get the SSN. Many employers will not allow you to start the work before getting the SSN because of payroll issues.
